Student-Athlete’s Recruiting Workbook

“College is a match to be made, not a prize to be won.” The college process is not about rankings, bumper stickers, or where others think you should go. You’re on the hunt for the schools that will push you, support you, prepare you, and make you happy.

I was fortunate to have a successful career playing international junior tennis, college tennis at Stanford, and professionally for eleven years on the WTA Tour. After managing the football recruiting process for my son and tennis families, I saw a void in how we advise and counsel young student-athletes. Less than 1% of the college athletes go on to play professionally, yet the college focus remains on the sport and team aspect, over the academic and personality fit.

How often have we seen athletes sign with programs that aren’t a fit for them… when the shy, protected athlete goes to an overwhelming public school, or the engineering-minded athlete ends up in a small liberal arts school? Does the athlete know the difference between a liberal arts economics program and an undergraduate business school economics and finance program?

My college process is different from other recruiting organizations, books, and articles you will find. I start with my education as a college counselor (another continuing education addiction certification), then combine it with the athletics component to find the right fit academically and athletically for the student-athlete.

Many think that the most challenging thing about the college recruiting process is the athletic scholarship. That is not true. There are over 3000 colleges and universities in the United States and over 1,000 schools with D2, D2, & D3 athletic programs. The biggest challenge is doing the research and making many decisions to ‘find the right fit”.

I wrote the “Student-Athlete’s College Tennis Recruiting Workbook” to make the college recruiting process more manageable while saving thousands of dollars for the athletes and parents. It is a complete step-by-step workbook (with templates, links, and worksheets), starting in the 9th grade, all the way through the freshman year in college.

I hope this workbook will guide families to find the best school fit, not only to set the child up for success as a student-athlete but also to prepare them for their post-athletic career.
